An author has never been to my town, my favorite writer, the only person I would ever want to meet (celebrity-wise). They are going on tour in Oct/Nov, what can I do?

Absolutely nothing. A book signing tour is arranged for an author through the publisher. Their dates are set according to many factors - including financial arrangements with the bookstores. Quite often stops on the tour work around major conventions and personal appearances the author is obligated to make. If a tour is set for October/November, it is highly unlikely additional stops can be added. Who is your favorite author? How close to you are they going to be? Close enough to travel?

There's a website called "Book Tour" where you can look up a lot of author tours, to see when/if your favorite author will be near your town.

FYI, booksigning etiquette: don't plan on spending more than a minute or two at the signing table if there are other people waiting to have their books signed. Not only will you get the people in line mad, you'll stress out your author, who will be worried about the people waiting and trying to think of a good, polite way to move you along.

Maybe you could offer to buy him/her a coffee in the bookstore after the event. Don't be offended if the author is too dazed and exhausted to take you up on this. Some would love the company, others dread both being asked and refusing these invitations--- so make it easy! Another option is to ask if you could email your questions/comments to the author at a later date.

Authors love people who've obviously read their book and ask genuine questions---as long as it's something they can reasonably answer on the fly---not, "what was your source for the reference of paragraph 3 on page 168 of the book you wrote five years ago?"

You can also suggest the author to your local college, bookstore, library, or service group (like Rotary) as a prospective speaker.
