First of all, I would never settle for a good book. Don't stop until you have written a great book. Good books are a dime a dozen. They end up on slush piles. Great books get noticed and read.

So many things go into a great book ... Characters that are alive and exciting. Characters that you remember for a long time. A strong theme running throughout with fascinating subplots and backstories. A first sentence that draws you into the book and doesn't let go. A well researched and developed story. A strong message. Sparkling dialogue. A plot that has no holes in it. Descriptions without over describing things as filler. A great command of the English language including understanding that words resonate and have harmony when placed together to form beautiful prose.

The whole trick is making the reader care. Make them WANT to turn the page and learn more. Teach them something. Make them walk away "smarter".

If you want to know the true definition of a great book, read William Faulkner. He defined it. He knew how to control a reader. How to grab them with the first sentence and drag them into the story and not let go of them until he was ready to. He was brilliant and every great book should have some of what Faulkner did in it..

That is just for starters. Pax - C

Well developed characters, so the reader gets involved with what happens to them. Good active plot, so the reader stays interested.

Don't waste words describing their outfits or their dinner--get to the interaction, dialogue, or action. Keep the story GOING somewhere.

Do you have a beginning, a middle and a summation and conclusion.

If so, you have everything you need.
