At this time there are two separate countries. One is called Israel and the other Palestine. I think you are referring to the area that is called Israel. It is Israel because that is where Israelis set up and defended their independent state.

Palestine is the Roman name for the Jewish homeland. Israel is the current name.

The Jewish inhabitants and the Arab inhabitants were given an opportunity under UN mandate to create sovereign nations.
