We have set this fool up as a wacky dictator - there are lots of people in this country who don't trust our government or pretty much anything that the government puts out - and this is the perfect opportunity to show the American people that our assessment wasn't just propaganda.
Among the many things he should be asked ,he must be asked hard questions - questions that we already know the answers to - and see if he owns up to his statements or pulls a "John Kerry" (outright lies or fakes a temporary memory loss).
Ask him if he has stated that his intentions are to annihilate Israel. Ask him if his government actively supports Humas, Hezbollah, the Revolutionary Guard, alQaeda and Islamic jihad. Ask him if he supports suicide bombers. Ask him if the real power in Iran lies with the Shiite clergy and their supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomeini. Ask him if he thinks the Holocaust was just western propaganda and never really happened.
Let the American people hear his answers - and then decide.

So you suggest that by denying others that freedom we are proving ourselves enlightened?

Doesn't work for me.

In the end, you either believe all men (really ALL, and women) should be free or you don't. I don't like the guy you're so frightened of this week any more than you.

But I believe in the precept of understanding that which you fear.

The other approach leads to stupid results like our foreign services firing agents that could speak arabic because they're gay. Great, so now we just make it harder to translate documents, and achieve nothing else except reveal fear and bias.

Republicans never consider compound consequences. Everything is black and white, 123...

everything that is except reality.

Actually, no I don't get the difference. Free speech has nothing to do with national origin beyond the idea that some nations do not allow their people to speak freely. We either believe in our principles, or we do not, but you cannot selectively apply them just because you do not like what is being said.

Personally I will stick with the childhood rhyme. You know the one, "Sticks and Stones"?

Now if Ahmedinejad starts throwing sticks and stones then by all means let's go get him, but until then I think we should show respect for the rights we claim to hold dear.

Edit: Ellen:
Since you cannot seem to grasp the simple concept of what I was saying above here is the whole rhyme for you.
"Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me".

As for your other statements. I have yet to see verifiable proof that Iran is actively supplying militants in Iraq with weapons. I have no real reason to doubt that they are, but suspicions do not constitute fact. Further what does your statement have to do with whether or not we should allow free speech? We are not at war with Iran and until such a time as we are we have no justifiable reason to engage in any form of censorship. To state otherwise would constitute fascism. Are you really so afraid of words that you would keep from being spoken at all, or does it make more sense to listen in order to evaluate the depth of the danger posed by your enemy?

"Know thy enemy as you know thy self" "The Art Of War - Sun Tsu" You cannot do this if every time they speak you are chanting "LALALALALA" in an attempt to drown them out.

This is in response to Leann's post:

You conservatives are unbelievable. Get over the John Kerry crap. It's old and tired, just like you and that hideous hat your avatar is wearing.

Now in response to the real question:

No one says we owe the Iranian dictator anything. But, letting an evil guy like that come on his own volition to get served is welcome by me. I love seeing a good butt kicking, and I think the President of Columbia handed him one in a most eloquent, intellectual way that shows Americans can be dignified, poignant and still kick some bootay without ever having to resort to violence. If anyone could possibly believe or support a word that Iranian idiot says now...well, I've got some land I'd like to sell them in the middle of the Atlantic.

President Bush said Ahmadinejad's appearance at Columbia "speaks volumes about really the greatness of America."

He told Fox News Channel that if Bollinger considers Ahmadinejad's visit an educational experience for Columbia students, "I guess it's OK with me."

No we don't owe Ahmadinejad anything, but come on you have to admit the president of the UNI, knocked Ahmadinejad on his @$$, best show I ever seen, couldn't have done a better job myself.

P.S. Bryan below, what are you talking about sticks and stones for, when the FACT is he's throwing IED'S at our troops as we speak, and has murdered/maimed thousands of them to date, soooo what;s with the sticks and stones theory?

I prefer to know what other people think. It makes for a clearer decision on my part.

If you do not know what someone is thinking it might just very well come to haunt you later.

Give this man the right to speak. Right now, you only have one side of the story.

KoKo Bananas - does it mean dictators who want to start another Holocaust? Would you be willing to live in Iran?

Your are right. We do not owe him anything. He was invited to speak and may say, or did say by now whatever he likes. He was apparently given quite grilling afterward. He knew what he was doing and did it anyway.
