life is scientifically determined by a number of conditions. Trees are alive, so are fungi and bacteria, yet these know no consciousness.

i believe you're really asking "can a person be a PERSON without ever having consciousness"

and the answer is no. We look on mental handicap with derision and strip them of their rights and privileges, and rightfully so since they're not capable of making sound judgments, or even contesting effectively what we would normally think of as sound judgments, thus denying their place as alternative thinkers in our society. The lower the quality of consciousness and ability to express ourselves, the less we see these as actual "persons."

When you have a shell, you simply have a flesh and blood mannequin

I do not believe people are, but may become that way. I know many fully conscious people for whom the lights are on, but nobody's home. This is not the same as coma or retardation of any sort, we cannot entirely know how or wherein the consciousness and person truly resides. I don't believe in the soul as a "ghost within the machine", but the Bible speaks of "a dead nephesh", a soul shrivelled within a living person. This is not a zombie, but a moral vacuum sucking life out of all that surrounds it. That to me is an hollow shell.

A perfect example of God not creating everyone perfect. Why is this allowed to happen is the greatest mystery of life. One we will never know the answer to while we are on this earth.
