They wish to have a furtherance of their identity...
Being "American" can mean so many things to so many different people.... It is hardly enough to define many different groups.
(That's actually part of the reason that I like calling myself an American.... I feel like I am part of all that craziness)

One answer would be that these individuals want to be known for their race, color or creed in order to make them an individual in another's point of view. This sometimes will take the place of the individual becoming a success in America with a good education, an excellent job as a result, and personal satisfaction as to who they really are. It doesn't take a rich successful person to be proud.
One earns pride by taking on responsibility, thereby becoming a personal success. That's what really counts in my view.

if you think about it, the only natives america has are the american indians, who are a minority these days.. america is comprised of so many different immigrant groups, and these groups do not want to lose their identity, they fight to keep their culture and their traditions alive and pass them down to the new generations in the family... it is a source of pride for most people and its a way of identifying yourself... saying you are american can mean you are a thousand different things... saying you are italian or greek or russian or chinese or whatever it is that you are lets people know something about yourself, not just where you recieved your birth certificate!

You must be referring to the tendency of many minorities to hyphenate their identity (i.e. Mexican-American, Asian-American, African-American). This only makes sense to me (a true American with no hyphen), if these people were born in another country or reside there half the year. I have always believed that when people refuse to think of themselves as Americans, then they have no right to be treated as such and are encouraging segregation. Also, how about thinking of yourself as human instead of black, white, etc.?

Maybe they have lost the respect that American's used to have for their country.
And our country doesn't make sure the new comers are as loyal as they used to either.
For me America is my home and I'd fight to keep her from harm.
While I'd love to visit other countries I'd always want to return to America in the end.

Because they want to be different and unique!
Most people are proud to be Americans but some who lived here all their lives are tired of being just an American, they want to be recognized as a unique person.
They want to be somebody! To be distingueshed from the rest

They are American, it's just a this-American or that-American. The culture here is so slanted toward ethnicity and heritage. It's kinda cool, you get the best of both worlds. You can celebrate 2x as many holidays.

I ask that same questions all of the time to people. My family has been in American for 100 years. When can we call ourselves Americans? I hate when people ask me my back ground. I'm an American like my father before me and his father before him and proud of it.
