The scariest thing about riding on the back is that you could lose your balance and fall off the back when the bike accelerates quickly. So holding around the rider's waist is the best for both, because neither of you will worry about falling off. If there's a passenger backrest, these fears are eliminated, and you can just put your hands on your knees. Some bikes have 'grab bars' beside or behind the back seat for passengers to hold onto. I never found these comfortable. When I rode with girls in college, I used to tell them to sit as close to me as possible to 'consolidate the center of gravity'. Which was baloney, but it felt good. 8^) My GF used to hold me around the waist, but sometimes she'd put her hands in my jacket pockets, if she was cold. 8^)

Wherever they both feel comfortable and safe.
My wife will wrap her arms around my middle, or put her hands on my waist, or use the rail on either seat. Sometimes when I look in the mirror, I see her arms waving up and down, flying like a bird. My daughters will usually use the grab rail on my seat.
On the other bike, my grandson went from a deathgrip around my middle to not holding on at all. Once I told him "You won't just fall off", he was much more comfortable and relaxed.
The other day, on my way home, I came across a guy with a broken down bike on the highway. I offered the cell phone, but he didn't know who to call. So, I gave him a lift. About 20 miles. He held both grabrails, one with each hand. I'm sure he was glad to be wearing a full face helmet. It went well with his shorts and unstrapped sneakers.

If you're a guy and the passenger is a chick, around the waist. If the passenger is a guy, tell him to use the strap across the seat or the handholds at the sides of the seat.

The passanger should hold onto anywhere they feel comfortable . They can hold onto the riders waist, belt , vest ,strap on the seat just not above the waist as it can throw the rider off balance if the passanger starts to panic .

is much easier and safer for the passenger if the bike has a sissy bar on it. then they can lean against the backing pad instead of on the rider. once the bike gets going, the g.o.b. (girl on back) doesnt need to hold onto anything really.

Poindexter just jealous Because either-he wants to wear chaps and but can't pull it off or- he's mad because his arms aren't around the dude wearing them. Get out the closet Poindexter! Oh yeah, try not to put all your weight on the drivers back while their braking. It's tough enough to hold your own weght off the bars, never mind two.
