Cheer-leading is a highly competitive sport with teams competing from around the nation. These girls practice several hours a day and have to learn a variety of routines both for cheering at sporting events and for competition. It can be very expensive to compete.
Cheer-leading can be dangerous as some stunts do not go as planned and have resulting in serious injuries including paralysis. Many of the stunts are hard on the knees and ankles with many cheerleader being sidelined by sprains and tears.
Hope this helps!

Cheerleading is tough work! I cheered on an all star co-ed squad and we would practice at least 5 times a week... nearing competition time we would practice 8 times a week (twice on saturdays or sundays)... practices were 2 hours long.. the first 30 minutes consisting of stretching, running, ect... about the last 10 minutes we would do cool down stretches. and during the time in between we would practice the routine... over & over & over & over.
one thing that a lot of people don't realize is the cost of cheering. it is extremely expensive. on top of the regular monthly tuition, you also have the cost of uniforms and competitions (transportation, hotels, food, competition fees and of course cheerleading souveniers!)
my coach was an ex-marine so he DID NOT take it easy on us and we did a lot of military exercises (which came in handy when i joined the air force!)
i loved it.. i encourage all young kids to get into it... it keeps you in AMAZING shape and keeps you so busy that you stay out of trouble. oh, and it's hard to explain in just words how to do a backflip.

Cheerleading is hard work. You have practice everyday, usually for about 2 hours. One hour, we exercise (jog, weight train, flexibility training) and the next hour, we define our routines. Of course, every weekend, we had a game. And, usually, every other weekend, we had some sort of fun raiser. Try watching the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleading show on CMT.

If you email me a list of questions I can try to give you some resources/information. I coached a youth squad for 5 years before going back to school.

look into the different kinds of stunts.
handsprings, cradles, full lifts, half lifts, how many people there need to be for certain lifts, their positions and what they do etc.
good luck. :)
