I went to the doc last friday for the first time and she did all the normal stuff like asking me when my last period was and told me I was 6 weeks and 1 day and my due date and did a normal check and everthing but didn't really do anything to confirm the pregnancy. They did draw blood, which the lady said that it was to test for things like rubella and HIV but she didn't say anything about testing for pregnancy. They didn't even look to see if we could see a sac or anything. Just wondering if this was normal.
Do you think that they will do more next time I go? I know maybe I should have asked when I was there but I didn't think anything of it at the time.
I see people always saying what their hormone levels are and that they saw the heartbeat at 6 weeks, but I didn't get to do any of that good stuff. Is that normal?

Like you I didn't get confirmation my first appt. However my first appt was with a Nurse practitioner at the end I asked if they were going to give me any type of test and she said nope since the OTC tests are all very accurate and I had all the other signs of pregnancy, let me tell you what I still did not rest easy until the doctor felt around the following appt and confirmed by the size of my uterus. So don't worry if they had a doubt in their mind I am sure they would have tested you, but I completely understand what your feeling. I guess I myself expected a little more thorough of a test.
Good luck!!!

Well when you get to the office they have you leave a urine sample. Now they also drew blood because they are going to do a hg count. Now if you are pregnant your hg level should be increasing and should be around the 1000s as your pregnancy continues your hg count gets higher and higher. They usually dont tell you that they are taking blood for this but they do. I had a miscarriage a early this month and they drew blood to do my hg count and confirm that the hg level was going back to normal. Now as for them saying hurray your urine sample shows that you are pregnant i havent gotten that before. They just asume that you are pregnant and that is why you have made the appointment. You could call them back and be like i know my pg test came positive at home, did the one taken at the clinic come out positive? They wont mind and they wont think you are weird they go through that all week long. As for the heartneat they usually dont have you listen to it until about 8-12 weeks. Docs will let you hear the heartbeat early on if you are a high risk pregnancy like if you have previous miscarriages. Always ask, what is the worse they can say is no. A hint for prenatal exams. When you go write down your question because they go by so fast. I write question down and then i ask because otherwise they dont really sit there and explain everything. ASK ASK ASK
Oh yes i forgot something very important when it comes to docs. No news is good news when they do blood work and things of that matter.
Good luck to you. Congratulations!!!!!!!

Normal. The urine or blood test will confirm. I did not have an ultrasound until week 11. Barely saw the heartbeat then. Heard the heartbeat the first time week 15. If there is no reason to question the health of the pregnancy then why have an ultrasound this early? Your going to have to have another in a few more weeks and then another around 20 weeks. That adds up and health ins only pays so much, unless you have really great ins. I have no idea what my hormone levels are at, and don't care. Every thing is going great and that is all I care about. Don't worry your doc knows what they are doing. Congrats and Good Luck!

When I went in for my initial visit, the nurse told me that since I had taken a home pregnancy test and it was positive there was no need to confirm the test since the test they use is the same. I never had my hormone levels checked. I see people saying lots of stuff on here that I never went through in my pregnancies. I think 6 weeks is a little early to hear the heartbeat, and they won't usually do a routine ultrasound before 20 weeks they will usually only do one before then if there is a reason.

If they asked you to pee in a cup at your doctor's appointment, then they confirmed it through a urine test.
Most doctors test your blood for the levels of HCG in your system to confirm also - they may have not told you they were checking for that because they may have assumed you knew.
At my first appointment, I was 7 1/2 weeks and they did an internal ultrasound and we saw the heartbeat. Prior to this, I only had blood work done and never actually had a dr appointment.
The doctor is basing your due date and how far along you are off of your cycle length and date of last menstrual period.

My Dr. did not confirm any of my pregnancy's either. They said that Home Pregnancy Tests are so reliable that if you have a positive one then they assume you are pregnant. They only do an Ultrasound if there is a medical indication such as needing to date the pregnancy if you don't have a known last menstrual period date or if you have a history of miscarriages, etc. An ultrasound that early is not routine.
Congratulations!

well when they do an internal exam they can feel the baby. I am sure the blood work will confirm pregnacy. I am pregnant with my 3rd and with my previous 2 they never confirmed just did the normal first visit but with the 3rd a few said I had to have an appt to confirm before they would even see me. Some do an U/S to help confirm dates and check on things.

they do alot of blood work, some of the blood work they do involves checking your hormone level and determining your blood type. But they may not share that info with you, mine didnt....you would think with the amount of blood they took out of me they wouldve been nice enough to share but every dr. is different. Maybe at your next appt they will do an ultrasound. My dr didnt do an ultrasound until i was 12 weeks since i wasnt having any abnormal cramping or bleeding. Definetly ask next time you are there though, its your body and your baby and you have every right to know.

They did an ultrasound for me, the same appointment after I got my test results back. I was 7 weeks, 3 days. The doctor told me he was doing it to make sure it was a normal pregnancy, not ectopic or anything.
