I have PCOS. I even have a baby with PCOS. It makes it harder to have a baby but it's possible. My symptoms are severe cramping, weight gain, acne, irregular periods, tons of cysts ruptures, moodiness. There's tons more. Best way for them to tell is blood work and a U/S mid cycle. If you have a positive PCOS U/S you will have like 10-20+ eggs in each ovary that are way tiny. Usually not big enough to ovulate and they turn into cysts and either rupture or dissolve naturally. There is no cure for PCOS but... there are treatments that help. Glucophage and birthcontrols and sometimes other hormones, depending on how severe your is.

There may be other reasons why your dr would want to test you.
Not every woman has every symptom of PCOS or even 1 of them.
For example: I have regular periods, got pregnant on my own once and don't have cysts.
My mom has PCOS and she is super skinny, has regular periods but had a hard time conceiving and had massive cysts that eventually caused her to get a hysterectomy at age 23.
The most common symptoms are:
Irregular periods or no period
Painful/Clotty/Heavy periods
Frequent cysts
Acne (especially along the neck & jaw, back & shoulders)
Excessive facial hair
Hair loss or thinning hair (on your head)
Rapid weight gain (especially in your mid-section)
Rapid weight loss (there are alot of thin women with PCOS...Victoria Beckham is one of them)
Infertility
Sking tags
Depression / Anxiety
Multiple Miscarriages

I stopped taking birth control a few years ago, and instantly gained 60lbs in 2 months. I tried to tell my dr that something was wrong. They never did anything about it. My husband and I started trying for a baby about 2 years ago. I got pregnant 2 weeks after trying, and lost the baby at 3 months (another sign of PCOS). Finally my dr said we could do some testing.
My symptoms are, dark hair growing on my breasts, and chin Acne, especially along the jawline, skin tags on my neck, overweight, long cycles, fatigue, and depression.

Acne, over weight, absent periods for a while after coming off the pill, now really long cycles (45 days), tiredness, cysts found in ovaries, normal hormone levels.

I have very irregular periods, and hair in places that I should have. That's about it, my gyno sent my for blood work and recommend a specialist since I am trying to get pregnant. He also said I have pcos, and did an u/s that confirmed it.
