Colonizing The Moon and Mars would be the first step to colonizing our solar system and ultimately colonizing planets OUTSIDE our solar system. We could use what we learn in colonizing The Moon and Mars and apply that to other planets.

In the next few centuries - research and discovery only.
The fact is that whatever we think about how Earth becoming seemingly over-populated, it will be a long long time before we can create conditions on Mars that even vaguely resemble Earth.
You'd have to wonder why we haven't colonised Antarctica. 5 million square miles of territory that offers infinitely better accomodation than Mars. The fact is, that wherever you are on Earth, it is a damn sight better than living in Antarctica. And Antarctica is a damned sight better to live on than Mars.
There's too much romantic thought about colonising planets.
Get real folks

What a great question. I think you should read the great book: "The Case for Mars" by Dr. Robert Zubrin, PhD, available on amazon.com and in some local bookstores. Probably the best reason in my mind is that sooner or later humanity will run out of energy sources on Earth. No, solar power, wind, and geothermal will not do it. We will need controlled nuclear fusion to power our societies and our starships to other solar systems, and the fuel for this will come from the giant planets, especially Uranus and Neptune. Mars is a far better place to build and service the staging of the extracting of this vital resource, including the building and servicing of spacecraft for this purpose as well as the starships for colonizing other solar systems. A vast high tech economy will arrise on Mars and maybe also on Ceres to build these ships, and grow food for space exploration, etc. etc. All of the best jobs in the solar system will be on Mars. Eventually all humans will leave Earth, and allow our planet to continue down the path it was going before humanity arrose to disrupt the natural world here. I look forward to it.

Well, I'm not saying I'm for it by any means or even saying it's possible but I suppose that since Earth only has so much of a 'carrying capacity' that we seem to have reached in some areas, we could increase our population

We shouldn't colonize Mars because the Marshains have made those Rover robots their rulers.
