Okay, so my dad is Canadian and Russian, so of course he was raised around hockey. My mom, on the other hand, was a gymnast. I play tennis, basketball, track and hockey. But whenever I tell people I can't wait til the upcoming hockey season, they say, "oh, excited for the Thunder to play?" and I say "No! I'm friggin excited for me to play! And the Toronto Maple Leafs!!" I've always loved hockey and probably always will. When my coaches first saw me play, they asked me to join the boys team along with this other girl who was really good instead of the girls. I was raised Hockey and will die Hockey. And people think I'm weird when I say I hate football players, but love Hockey Players. What the heck? Hockey is so much more dangerous. But why do people look at me like I'm some kind of alien?

Anyway, Maple Leafs kick butt with Alexei Ponikarovsky and Nik Antropov!

*My dad is 6'6 and 215 lbs and my mom is 5'10" and 160lbs. So far I'm 5'7" & 120lbs. And its mostly muscle (not sickly).

haha don't worry you're not alone either. I live and breathe hockey along with the 30 other girls on my team. Honestly I'm counting down the days. Captains practice has already started, but officially we still have a few weeks or so. I'll play for as long as I possibly can. Well of course hockey players are better than football players, that should just go without saying. I'm lucky that my school has a great girls hockey program so everyone in school is used to it and supportive, where as anyone outside of school looks at us like we have three heads. People just aren't quite used to the idea of it. Seeing a girl that isn't some kind of beastly thing that then claims to play a sport like hockey just is incomprehensible to them.

I'm a Bruin fan myself, our teams actually staying over night in Boston to see a game. We were supposed to go to Canada for a tournament, but the funds weren't quite there.

Well, America traditionally is more into football than hockey. Nothing wrong with being a hockey player, I'm sure you're as good as you say you are. But liking hockey doesn't mean that you have to say you hate football and all the other sports. Just simply as you like hockey, nothing more and nothing less. No one's going to ask for details unless maybe you bring up players no one knows-THAT'S making you look weird... They're going, "who?"...followed by weird look. You can ask them "What?" if they stare instead of just being the subject of a stare. Be assertive.

Congrats to you for making the team.

It's just cultural, in most parts of the US football is just more popular than hockey. If you lived here in Toronto no one would think twice about you loving hockey. Girls and boys of all shapes and sizes play. Don't worry about it, just do what you enjoy.

Unfortunately, it's just another way that society has created a gender biased opinion on who should and should not be interested in what sport. Men should be the ones liking hockey and football and such, and women should like watching and participating in gymnastics and figure skating. I say everyone needs to get over it. I am a big sports buff and I enjoy watching and participating in "rougher" sports. Just ignore everyone, they're stupid.

It's rude that people do that. It's great that you want to play hockey, and congrats for making the team! I don't get why people think hockey is only a boy's sport. It really isn't, and you should be proud of yourself.

So what if they look at you weird? You have a passion for something and maybe they are just jealous that you have that and they don't. You dont see too many women in the hockey world so I think that you play and enjoy it its wonderful!

Don't let them get to you. Girls can do anything a boy can do, and sometimes even better! I don't think that there is anything wrong with girls playing typical "Boys" sports as long as they are good at them. More power to you. I told my husband that if we ever have a girl that I want her to learn to work on cars so she doesn't have to depend on a guy to do it for her!
