because the road grime gets deposited on the near-vertical surface of a hatchback window, where on a notchback the grime can't make the trip along the horizontal surface of the trunk (airflow over the roof is less turbulent on the notchback, since it doesn't terminate at the base of the window).

The rain or snow will pool due to the slope of the glass. A flat glass (back of mini van) gets really dirty do to the aerodynamics. The vortex on the back will bring tons of mud and dirt. A car in another hand. When you drive, on the rain and if you keep moving, hardly gets wet.
Anyway, that is an add on feature, is one of those nice things to have, not a must have.

Here's my theory.
Hatch back windows are larger, and at less of an angle for the water to roll off. As opposed to a car with a trunk

it's because the car window in the back is smaller than an average car that in case of rain they want to wipe off as much rain as possible to see as much as the back window as you can
