Gehrig the better hitter, but great-hitting CFs are harder to come by than great-hitting 1Bs, so it depends on how much one values defensive position.
If Mick had had healthy legs (and laid off the bottle), there would be much less ambiguity to the answer. I'd probably prefer Mantle, but would have no problem settling for Gehrig.
