i filled out an application to get a new social security card so i can get my driver's license, and we're going to take it to the social security office on Wednesday. i was wondering if anyone knows how long it will take for me to get the card. one person told me ill have to wait like 6 weeks, then someone else told me that i can get it right there after i turn in the application. i live in Illinois....does anyone know for sure?

They can give you a temporary paper documenting it for use while waiting for the real card.

All SS cards are sent out from a single location. So it will take a couple of weeks at least. They will give you a receipt that shows you have applied for the card and some places will except the reciept in some case, but you should check first.

4 to 6 weeks is average. Social Security field offices do not print the cards, they're printed at our central office in Baltimore, MD. If you need a printout, you can obtain a receipt to show that you have applied for a new card.

If you have a number already and are getting a replacement card, then they give you a piece of paper saying this is your number - as for employment and the card comes in the mail in 2 weeks as I recall. If you are applying for a new number, then I am not sure how they handle it.

It used to be 6 weeks, however I do not think it ever really took that long...that was on the outside.

I was not, however given a replacement on site last year. It took about 2 weeks to get it in the mail.

I got mine in about a week just this month. The social security office will give you a print out to use at the BMV(or DMV).
