More of a nuisance than a help. Grass only needs mowed once a week during the growing season. Goats need cared for every day. They'll need more food than just grass, especially in the winter, and will need water. Maybe you can get your kids to help out, when they are old enough.

Check your by-laws. Keep in mind goats will eat just about ANYTHING and are not necessarily attracted to grass.
I solved the problem of too much lawn to care for, by killing it off and replacing it with low ground covers that accept wear, but do not require mowing. (clover, creeping thyme, ajuga, creeping jenny, periwinkle, etc. work great in zone 4 where I am.) Not all creepers are tolerant of foot traffic so check with your local garden supply store .
I killed my grass by placing large dark garbage bags over the grass and held it down with rocks. Basically the hot sun cooked it. It wasn't attractive for a few weeks, but I didn't have to mow either. I added a few inches of new topsoil before planting the new plants. keep in mind to space them apart as they grow quickly and many have an indefinite spread. Remove the bags as the creepers grow in.
Another alternative that looks quite attractive is to cover large areas with round rocks. They come in many shapes, sizes and colours, but can be very expensive.
I lucked out the first two years in my home by being able to hiring pre-teens in our neighbourhood to mow for me . They were cheap and did a great job.

You should stick to your lawn mower. Goats will require more responsibilities(and money!) from you than machine, since they are live animals after all. You can't just leave them in your yard day after day, and do nothing to care for them, right? They might eat your grass, but you have to clean up after them... you know? Hire a kid in your neighborhood to mow your lawn.

Goats eat brush, not always grass. Get a self propelled mower.
