People are capable of change but once one is addicted it is really hard to say.

No I don't think "once a druggie always a druggie" in every case.
Some people when they are young experiment with drugs and then forget it after trying it and don't get addicted.
Others get addicted and have such a hard time getting free of the high that it bleeds them of all their money and family and friends etc...but only some people go in that direction.
Those that get in trouble really young and can't quit you worry about the most and the outcome for them really depends on the intervention and motivation (mostly their own) to quit. Never give up on the young ones but they are the hardest to watch wasting their life.
Those that are still using drugs regularly as adults probably fall into that catagory "once a druggie, always a druggie" and I wouldn't waste a minute on.
Pot is such a contraversial drug some say it is okay but as long as it remains illegal and you can't buy it like you can a bottle of wine it is not okay. People are strange about pot it is like a denial thing "it's really not like a drug at all"...give me a break than why it is still illegal.
Capable of change? Yes, with years of hard work.
Those I have seen change have done so by motivation either for a partner or to pursue the love of a potential partner. One person used to live on the street and got himself clean and built up his own company and had a good life and eventually a family....unfortunately it still wasn't a happy ending....in the end smoking and genetic heart disease killed him at 46.
Live life to the most even when you are on the right path you don't know how long you will be here, why waste time on things that can mess you up.

If someone's taken drugs before, crossing that line again isn't such a big thing. A lot of people I know have a complete mental block and could never take any sort of illegal drug. As for something like pot, that depends on your own views: is the fact that it's illegal bad enough to reject someone, knowing that the break the law in such an insouciant way without even feeling guilt? Personally, I'm no model citizen, have smoked pot, and prefer the company of hash heads (who may start speaking incohesive and abstract manner) than a brash and potentially violent drunkard.

Definately an individual choice. I am anti drugs so would not want to be with a druggie. But if they were adament about changing that particular habit ,well maybe . I believe that if a person wants to change and can put that into action it is very possible, but not easy. Change is as possible as the person's determination.Although I wouldn't rush in,because it wouldn't be all plain sailing. Actions speak louder than words.Best wishes:)

An addict not only drugs, alcohol or anything else that is addictive needs to admit their problem and that they need to stop can become an acceptable member of society once they go through the motions of detox and they keep it up. If they do not admit to the problem then there is no hope and will always be a druggie or an alcoholic etc.,

I have experience working in the health care industry. 95% of the time, once a druggy, always a druggie applies.
The only time I ever saw druggies change is when the chose to change. If they don't want to change or do not acknowledge that it is destructive in their lives, then they won't change. simply put, people do not change what they do not acknowledge that needs changing.
Majority of people that use pot, tend to use "harder" drugs, too. Remember that when you meet someone that smokes pot regularly.

Having a joint a night is much like have a glass of wine a night or a few beers. Pot isnt something to be concerned with. Unless of course it is used all day long. Now if this partner is into other things such as cocain, herion, speed, crack. I would just be weary or them. If they went to rehab they deserve a second chance. But if they replase it could up costing you some money. So its your call, are you willing to give this guy/girl a second chance?

Im sure everyone at some point in there lives has been offered or will take Marijuana, but it doesn't distinguish a person for who they are.
People can change, if they are on Heroine then thats another thing, but Pot is Bad, but not to bad to have a relationship with someone.
Hope this helps
All the best
The Pmiester :)

Of course people are capable of change. But the real question is - Do they REALLY, REALLY want to change? Many of them do not have strong will power and fall back to drugs after having gone through a programme.
This person is not your partner yet since you use the word potential. Do be very rational and not be blinded by flashes of affection and think you will be THE one to change this person or be this person's saviour unless you are writing a romantic novel.
It's down to this person, not down to you to do any changing.

Interesting you should say that.I actually believe once an addict always an addict-but that doesnt mean you cant stop.In much the same way as some alcoholics are "recovering"-they will always be alcoholics but choose to no longer drink. In the same way I know people that have changed-they will always be addicts but have stopped taking drugs.
It totally depends on the attitude of the individual and if they want to be drug free. in fact AA/NA/CA is full of people that used to take drugs and alcohol and have chosen a life without them. They will always be addicts though.

Yes! If they are STILL doing it.
If they stopped, then that is different. People can and do reform and change, everyone deserves a second chance. Smoking pot is the thin end of a wedge.... often people are shot to pieces in the head... its linked to a whole heap of mental health problems in people who are "susceptible" to them. AND to make matters worse, they play it down, make out there IS no problem and everyone does it.
You can't and won't change if you won't accept responsibility and won't see that it is a problem in the first place.
