Years and years of repressive Puritan moral values have left us, quite possibly, the most uptight country in the world outside of Vatican City.
Why do you think America has more sexual deviants that any other place in the world...

Who the hell is uncomfortable? I'm not. Are you? Well, we are, after all, a Christian nation, and for some reason, most Christians tend to be a little Victorian in their sexual beliefs. I just don't happen to agree. I'm not sure where it came from, but maybe the fact that condemning "loose morals" and idolizing the home and family were tools to make the colonies and later the western expansion work. Wouldn't work too well if the men got women pregnant then ran off and left the woman and child out on the prairie to fend for themselves, would it? And without families, what would be the point of building towns and homes, anyway? So, that is my theory...right now, at least. Maybe I'll think of something else later on, if I think about it at all.

We do have a Puritan heritage up in the northeast... and the evangelicals in the South are also very adamant about sexual repression perhaps moreso than ever. America is also a nation of social-climbers... there's this kind of mass identity crisis where everybody wants to be somebody and be accepted, so there's a LOT of weight placed on being a conformist. Even the non-conformists create rules for each other to conform to. (I'm reminded of Monty Python's Life of Brian... [crowd, in unison] "Yes, we're all individuals!" [one small voice from somewhere in the crowd] "Uh, I'm not.")
So something as unique and individual and personal as sexuality takes a backseat to one's desire to fit in and be popular.

i always consider america to still be very young,
the people and society are still finding their way,
it grew up too quickly, in terms of moderrnisation, got there far too soon and its not mentally caught up yet
sexuality is just one of those issues that maturity and age will help sort out to a much better degree
it will happen, always keep in mind that you are still very young compared to places like britain, (scotland where im from)
we have had hundreds of hundreds of years to mature to where we are and we accept people like julian clary, placebo, mcr, scissor sisters etc with open arms because of primarily age,
we matured enough to accept we have no need to be threatened by these different people, they wont 'infect' us and are just the same as us in most human respects,
the unknown aspect of sexuality has been taken away and replaced with knowledge and acceptance
acceptance is something that takes time and you havent had enough of it yet
give yourself more time to mature, as a society, more age
we all have a horrible, prejudiced and mixed up history but it becomes history at some point when you get older
just like being an individual person
change will happen slowly
heritage isnt a cause,
its just a downfall of still being young and the only 'cure' is age
its basically just the journey of a country developing
believe me there are still things in britain that we wonder why in this day and age it still happens etc
and we just wait for age, maturity and knowledge and understanding to help sort it out

i think of so. My step dad is incredibly homophobic and takes each hazard to make exciting of LGBTs (he does not recognize i'm) and that i'm exceptionally particular he's gay he in basic terms wont admit it. i've got come throughout the time of a lot of people like this, and years later it variety of feels those are those that have been in basic terms repressing their own sexuality.

Oddly enough, americans are uncomfortable in the open, yet internet porn is the biggest business on the internet. If people were more open, maybe people wouldn't need a fix on the computer. ?

I didn't realize that we are.... I suppose sex is taboo to discuss openly, however our society is saturated with sexuality. Advertisements, celebrities, fashion trends, etc. Sex is everywhere and a big part of that is because of the old adage that "sex sells". In fact I'd argue that our society is obsessed with sex to some extent.

Americans do not like to acknowledge any aspect of their beings which might lead them to the notion that they are animals.
