If there is a significant distance between the ceiling and the fan, contact the manufacturer or the store where you bought it to see if there's a shorter shaft available to support the fan. If not, you may have to go with a new low clearance fan as a replacement. These hug the ceiling more than regular fans. They aren't as efficient, because they can't get as much air behind them to draw on, but they will still help move air.

TOOLS NEEDED:
CHAINSAW
ELECTRICAL TAPE
PROTECTIVE EYE WEAR
RUBBER SOLED SHOES
STEP 1. USING THE CHAINSAW, CUT A CIRCULAR
HOLE IN CIELING AROUND THE FAN MOUNT.
STEP 2. CHECK FOR ANY WIRES THAT WERE
SEVERED, THEY CAN BE TAPED BACK
TOGETHER.
STEP 3. CUT THE HICKEY THAT IS TOO LONG.
STEP 4. CHECK FOR ANY WIRES THAT WERE
SEVERED, THEY CAN BE TAPED BACK
TOGETHER.

STEP 5. PUT IT BACK UP. THE GLUE NEEDED WILL
DEPEND ON THE TYPE OF CIELING YOU
HAVE.
