There is a great fear in government circles that Ahmadinejad may come out as a reasonable human being. That would destroy years and years of propaganda.

Of course, if he comes out as a bloodthirsty dictator, that will reinforce their case. If he comes out saying things which appear reasonable and appeasing, they'll accuse him of being a hypocrite. So he can't really win.

What surprises me is how many people take offense at the fact he wants to speak at all. Isn't it one of our guiding principles that we should listen to what a man has to say before we condemn him?

He's not 'our' guest. He's a guest of Columbia University, one of the most liberal academic institutions in the country. The UN is our guest.

He was insulted by Bollinger who, in a back handed way, portrayed him as what Bollinger perceives a typical conservative in the US.

All the while, conservatives were outside demonstrating against human rights abuses in Iran.

Quite a paradox, don't you think?

Well like #1 said. The UN is here. Leaders come to talk and we need to listen. I must say, though, I have a very bad time listening to Bush spout fear.

A reason I don't like Ahmadinejad is because (my information tells me) he is a Holocaust denier. I think the world should be beyond that by now.

harshmistressmoon -- See. Bush has set fear into you. For your information Bush's invasion of Iraq was not in defence of an attack as can be better argued in Desert Storm when Iraq invaded Kuate in 1991. Kuate, being an ally got defence protection from the US.

Not so in today's war. There had been no agression against the US or ally and Bush's invasion was an act of agression which is a War Crime.(Nueremburg, Geneva Convention, UN)

Since Iraq was suspected of hording WMD (weapons of mass destruction) the UN had agreed upon sanctions against Iraq and investigators to search Iraq for evidence thereof. The investigations did have problems from time to time with Saddam but they were very clear that they were not unduly hampered.

The UN would have had to ratify a resolution to permit an invasion of Iraq. This did not happen because France exersised its veto (and the veto has often been used especially by the US and Russia - look it up)

Therfor, the US became a rogue nation along with the UK and other followers when they invaded Iraq. There was no reason for Americans like you to fear that Iraq would come over and kill you. That's just fear that continues to be spouted by Bush.

I don't know how many Americans like you need counseling because of the unreasonable fear you have.

harshmistressmoon -- is really a misnomer for someone with so much fear. Please realize that when Bush and Powell showed those images of military trucks in Iraq and claimed them to be moving WMD around to fool the UN investigaters he was lying. He wasn't just wrong or just mistaken - he was lying. There was no evidence of this plus the amount of weapons stock piled in preperation for war is a huge number requiring huge warehouses to store them in various regions of the country. You can't just truck them quickly from one place to another. Besides, no one was informed of where the UN investigators were going to check next. They didn't supply Saddam with an itinerary.

Holocaust Denier--

Excuse me! He is a guest of the UN. I think the world would benefit by moving the UN to a country that understands the need to 'talk' even to bad people who happen to be in power.

There are many people here on Answers who not only promote genecide of 'all' the Middle East but also say to do it with nuclear bombs. (this type of question can be construed as illegal)

Ahmadinejad is a vicious murderous thug. He and his Iranian friends are responsible for funding much of the terrorism in the world.

Ahmadinejad's presentation at Columbia University is merely a forum for him to spew his propaganda and hate.

Perhaps if I were to give you an example closer to home you might be able to understand a little better.

There is an organization in the United States that is a vicious, homicidal terrorist organization and behaves in a remarkably similar manner to the behavior exhibited by the terrorists funded by Iran.

Fortunately our law enforcement organizations have been quite successful at suppressing and prosecuting this terrorist organization and putting its leaders in prison. Yet this terrorist organization still rears its ugly head from time to time.

If this terrorist organization located in the United States tried to get one of its leaders a forum to spew their propaganda and hate at Columbia University they would be prevented form speaking at Columbia and quite rightly so.

What is this terrorist organization in the United States that I am talking about?

It is the Ku Klux Klan.

We should not give a forum to a vicious thug like Ahmadinejad any more than we should give a forum to a leader from the Ku Klux Klan.

Now do you understand my point a little better?

(edit) With respect to the number of deaths that Ahmadinejad has caused, it is in the hundreds of thousands at a minimum.

Iran funds most of the terrorism in the world.

Ok then let's have David Duke, Sam Bowers and Johnny Lee Clary speak to the student body.

What? Not interested? What happened to being kind to your guests? At least these three are Americans. Is it too late for you to be civil? I guess you dislike these people as much as most Americans dislike Ahmawhatever.

Humanist, the propaganda machine seems to be working overtime, notice the mass hysteria.

Why not let the guy speak? We let our "elected" president speak. Communication can be an amazing thing...however, I think people are just afraid of the truth.

Are you kidding me???? Really???? This is a man that openly calls for the death of america. Why he is even allowed to step one foot in this country is beyond me. He should have been immediately arrested for organizing and supporting attacks against our soldiers in Iraq.

I dont get people like you. We can be protested against around the world. Our flag and presidents burned in effigy. Yet we are suppose to openly embrace the people that seriously and literally want us blown off the face of the earth and celebrate in the streets when we are attacked.

The rest of the world that thinks the US is so terrible can go to hell for all I care. Who do they think they are judging us when their own nations are so screwed up and their histories are full of more violence and death then the US could ever claim. If the rest of the world shared the values of the US and had a Constitution like that of the US then this world would be a far far better place. We are a country that can live side by side by side people of diff religions, races, cultures without blowing each other up. In less then a few hundred years we have managed to overcome the types of discrimination and racism that still plagues so many of those nations that like to condemn and criticize us. So those anti americans around the world can take their own advice and mind their own business.

Why is it other nations like to yell at us for getting involved in other countries businesses, yet dont stay out of our business. Bunch of hyppocrites.

I guess we should let him develop nukes. Hussein attacked another nation and people like you still probably believe he has more credibility then the US. Thank goodness our national defense is not yet run by people that think we can hold hands with our enemies and sing songs and the world would all be peaceful. Here on planet earth, in the real world, our enemies cant always be hugged away.

Razz, your ignorance is showing. He has openly called death to america many times. Links to websites is not proof. Newsflash, just because its on the internet doesnt mean its true.

I do not have to be civil to him and if I had my way he would not be in this country and if that causes a negative impression of me so be it.

That is the problem with some of you people. You treat the president of the United States like a terrorist and a fool while seeking to place the president of Iran on a pedestal when he is certifiable and a tyrrant. Just like Yasser Arrafat didnt deserve respect neither does Ineedajob (poke), Castro or Chavez.
Your world view is backwards in my opinion but you are free to feel however you choose.
