For example, if enough babies die in their cribs from dangerously defective cribs, the market will punish the bad manufacturers with declining sales from word of mouth and reward the safe manufacturers.

Why can't liberals realize that the market can solve all???

same goes for tainted food, or lead laced toys or ecoli laced farm products, etc....

The market can't drive everything - especially things like you mention. How many babies need to die before the market changes? One role of gov't is to protect its people - it takes many forms. Protecting people isn't limited to taking up arms against our enemies. What's wrong with putting measures in place for products sold in our country? Take a look at Libby, MT. Was it right for WR Grace to knowingly put its workers in jeopardy - all in the name of profit? Would you feel this way if it were your baby that died from lead poisoning? Your brother that died from asbestosis in a vermiculite mine?

Your reasoning is a little bit scary. You want people to keep purchasing a crib that is defective and let more babies die? Common sense tells people that safety matters. All your defective crib manufacturer needs to do is start requiring more quality control testing and it would probably do them a world of good if they would make their instructions more reader friendly and use clearer pictures on such instructions. It use to be that when you purchased a product, such as a crib, it was already assembled. Now if you want it assembled, you have to pay more on an already inflatedly priced product. The materials have become shabby at best and are now made to fall apart so that people will keep on purchasing poorly constructed products. Sad, especially when it comes to the health and wellbeing of an infant being the last thought on the manufacturers mind. The first being a profit margin.

The market is all about money anymore. They have lost all credibility. This is not a liberal vs. conservative issue. This is simply capitalism vs. the people.

Start respecting life instead of the bottom line.

So if it was your child that died from a defective crib, you wouldn't be angry that the gov't didn't say something to the manufacturer about safe products? Don't we as citizens have a right to be protected from manufacturers who cost cut and sell unsafe products? I think we do.

If the market "solved" it all that would be great but it's a lie, man people like you think the markets are God and that is flat out delusional, Consumer protection is not only the right course of action but the moral one, I hope the market comes crashing down on your puny head though you deserve it

I don't agree. Defective products should bring lawsuits. The marketplace should not be tolerant of defective products. However inferior products should be victims of the market place.

The number of faulty products prove gvmt departments are inept at protecting us and should be dismantled and be replaced by market ideas.

I am not willing to let people die while it is being "sorted out", as you put it. This is the stupidest question ever.

Clearly you are correct. Say would you be interested in a bargain ham?
