Does anyone know anything about this? I just learned about the rumor today, but despite all my google searches I come up with no conclusive "evidence" besides "The Mayan calendar ended on that day." (Well, my calendar ends Dec 31st of this year. Then I go out and buy a new one. Doesn't mean the world is over, yeesh. O_O) Seriously, this interests me. Is there anything that could seriously contribute to the end of the world in 2012, or is it a big bunch of supersitious hoo-haw like the Y2K crisis?

The Mayan Long Count calendar doesn't end that day. It is a bunch of hype and hooey and drama over nothing. The calendar simply starts a new Baktun cycle, going from Baktun 12 to Baktun 13. The Long Count can go up to Baktun 19 (in about 2700 more years) and then Pictun 1 begins. (A pictun is 20 baktuns; a baktun is about 400 years). So you can see that basing anything on the calendar ending...when it doesn't... is pretty silly.
The calendars of Mesoamerica are worth studying (like I've been doing for over 15 years) even without the hype.

I shall answer this by changing 2 words around in the last bit of your question,

"it is a big bunch of supersitious hoo-haw like the Y2K crisis".

There is no other "evidence" other than the Mayan calendar happening to "run out" on that day and, as you say, your calendar runs out on 31st December 2007 and that doesn't mean the world will end.

You seem like a sane and well-adjusted person. I wouldn't waste any more time or electricity researching this further because all you will find are the unsupported rantings of nutters to back up this ludicrous non-event.

It is all superstitious hoo-haw like the Y2K crisis. Actually the Y2K thing was more real because there WERE some actual problems associated with that date, even if the press over hyped them. The ONLY connection to 2012 is the Mayan calendar.

that's preparation is predicated off a Mayan calendar (it quite is the year the calendar stops). i don't understand why or how the Mayans got here to the conlusion that that's whilst the earth might end. i don't take it that heavily. anybody concept the international might lead to 2000 or whilst the planets final all aligned up. actuality is, there is not any understanding whilst the earth will end. And im seeing way too many questions approximately this date at right here.

2012 became the new panic date after Nostradamus' 1989, Y2K, and the Mayan 5/5/2000 failed to materialize. And I think there was something involving Jerry Falwell, too.

When the world ends, you'll know it. In the meantime, don't worry about it... unless you're the guy who's supposed to look for asteroids. ;-)

When I was a kid, the first time I saw a sunset I honestly thought the world was coming to an end. When my mom whent to the hospital to have my baby sister, I thought that was going to be the end of the world too.

Apparently, life has a way of continuing, despite the circumstances......

Well, you got one part right:

"is it a big bunch of supersitious hoo-haw"

The answer to that would be yes.

Even if it was going to end....stop concerning and researching about it and just get on with your life.....

although my teacher did say that astronomers had been predicting that the world would end in 2012.....

something to do with a comet hitting earth but thats probably not very accurate....

Yes, I have heard this. Apparently, many prophets from many different centuries came up with the year 2012 as doomsday. It's all a matter of how superstitious you are. I personally don't believe it.
