What causes the teeth on the end of the armature to be ground off. I have had two starters now where something is ruining them.

It's the right starter... same as the one that was on there. I didn't buy this Harley new so I don't have the help/package plan you are refering to, unfortunately.

OK, I admit I don't know. But, once I made sure it was positively the right starter part number for the motorcycle, I would make sure the gear teeth were properly aligned with the engine gear teeth and at the proper insertion distance. Also, what if the engine gear teeth need replacement. Surely Harley's technical service department you've paid so much for to access when you bought the motorcycle knows the answer. This isn't "rocket science" is it?
