My English homework is to write a short story for kids, with basic language and sentence structure. Any ideas what it can be about?

This depends on the age group, but if you are writing for Key stage one, which I would imagine you are as you wish to use basic language and structure, then you need to make the story about something they can relate to.

You can make a good story out of any simple every day event. First day at school, going to the dentist/doctor etc.

Making a story repetative is good for helping children learn to read. i.e a story about farm animals etc

The dog went to Peggy Pig, 'have you seen Farmer Dan?'
Peggy pig shook her head and said 'no I have not'

The dog went to Hetty Hen , 'have you seen farmer dan?'
Hetty Hen shook her head... etc etc

Also making it predictable helps a child to follow the story better and gives them confidence when reading.
My advice would be to read a couple of the magic key books. When I had to do this for my teaching degree I spent several hours down at the local library reading some of thier books for inspiration.

Good luck xxx

Generally children's stories involve animals, monsters, witches or Mummy and Daddy. So

A visit to the zoo

The Flying Bumblegum

The Green Eyed Witch

A visit rto the Seaside with Mummy and Daddy

The picnic
Worm's best day
Fluffy's Tiger Adventure
Aardvark's Lunch
Time For Bed
Hide And Seek

There's some ideas for titles. Use your imagination from those.

what about a story about a boy who has trouble with his spelling and his mum (or dad/teacher/grandmother) gives him some tips on how to remember his spelling list

for example a way to remember the spellig of the word because is - big elephants can always understand small elephants

and could - come on you lucky duck

it helps the boy with his spellings and he gets top marks in his next spelling test
