The UK would seem to be planning to launch a manned mission to mars which I think was scheduled for 2015.

But that's just an initial trip to see how things work, what unexpected problems arise. They're putting together a simulation right now to try and figure some problems out. It will be simulated right down to the crew not being able to leave for the whole ~year or so (I think) of the mission and radio lag as would be experienced from their distance.

Considering how far off "possible" missions are I'm fairly certain tourist flights are further into the future. As it stands a government can set a date but as political priorities changes it is always possible that space exploration plans can too. Not to mention the possibility that it could take longer just due to the need to spend more time working around problems...

They're not even sure yet if current environment suit technology would be able to handle the charged dust on the planet's surface. The moon was problematic but mars is expected to be much worse.

Personally I'd rather put all resources towards the technological singularity [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technological_singularity ] that we may simply begin an era of massive breakthroughs advancing mankind leaps and bounds out of control so that we can simply solve all of the problems involved in any undertaking and do as we please.

"The Technological Singularity is the hypothesized creation, usually via AI or brain-computer interfaces, of smarter-than-human entities who rapidly accelerate technological progress beyond the capability of human beings to participate meaningfully in said progress. Futurists have varying opinions regarding the timing and consequences of such an event."

Once we make it that far it could only be a matter of months before the first interplanetary travels and the first extra-terrestial luxury hotels. :-P

Who ever you heard that from or whatever you read it off, they're pullin ure leg. The furthest we're getting by the year 2015 is the construction of a moon base, that's it!

I guess it'll be 150 years from now that the first people are sent to land on Mars

I read something that said the celebrities and wealthy people are paying 2 million dollars a ticket for future space shuttle to Mars when they become available to public in the future. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Tickets for people like me and you? Or how about a ticket for a petri dish or plant? That would be a cool trip but that is only 8 years from now. I cannot imagine it happening so soon. Good luck and I hope your dreams come true!

Ask me in 2015.

Considering we've hardly sent a manned space ship to the moon for over twenty odd years, no. Unlikely.

No, that is not true. Well, maybe someone will take your money and give you two pieces of paper that say "ticket to Mars" on them, but there will be no flight for you to use them on.

That's probably a bit optimistic. Maybe you'll be able to get tickets to the space station by then ☺

Utterly false. We probably won't even have professional astronauts back on the moon until 2020.
