I'm mostly skeptical of recorded albums before the mid-eighties, but I've always enjoyed prog rock related records. I have a lot of the Pink Floyd catalogue, I have 2112 and Moving Pictures from Rush, and I have Red and Three of a Perfect Pair from King Crimson. Where do I go from here? What albums from Rush and King Crimson should I check out for more experimental hard rock/metal/rock tunes? What other bands should I check out on the more inventive and groundbreaking tip?

Thanks for all the responses so far! I should have specified that I meant more classic prog rock. I've already got the more current stuff under control... Tool and the Mars Volta and Isis and Circa Survive and Pelican and all that good stuff.
Thanks to the guy who suggested I check out the King Crimson albums I already stated I own, good one there buddy hehehe.

King Crimson - RED, Three of a Perfect Pair
Red only has five songs, but its almost an hour long.

Dream Theater is good. Try Train of Thought.

Coheed's not bad, but they did release their albums in order. Good apollo I'm burning Star 4 was the 4th album. (the first was under the name Shatubie (or something like that)

I prefer In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 over their newer album.

Coheed and Cambria are pretty inventive. They named their albums out of order and eventually when they're finished they'll all tell one story (I think 4 is the first album they recorded).

As far as Rush goes if you liked 2112 then I would recommend getting Caress of Steel. They released it before 2112 and it's sortof the same format. One really long song that tells a story about the search for the fountain of youth and then a few random songs. You could also get A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres for the whole Cygnus X-1/ Hemispheres story.

I'm a huge TOOL fan... any album from them is worth listening to from beginning to end.

Also, earlier Mudvayne albums are a little heavy, but still very much on the prog side.

Primus is the same too, sometimes heavy, but still a bit wild, progressive, and fun to listen to. Les Claypool is a genius bass player.

Also check out a band called Isis... they opened for TOOL last year when I saw them in NJ. They have a similar sound and feel to TOOL, but still add enough of their own touches to separate themselves.

A lot of old Progressive is being mentioned but here os some of the newer Progressive that is very good as well and all they need is a listen to.

Anubis Gate
Aviva
Gazpacho
Jim Gilmour (originally with Saga)
Mindgames
Orpheo
Porcupine Tree
Red Sand
Spocks Beard
Sylvan
Three
Vanden Plas

The Progressive world is bigger now than it's ever been with excellent bands sprinkled heavily throughout. By saying that you listen to Progressive Rock or Progressive whatever tells me that you like music not of the norm. Please don't be like one of those that says "there is no new good music." That's not Progressive thinking.

i wont be repetitive with the other answers, which are great.

but i really recommend the album El Cielo by Dredg. really amazing prog-alt-rock cd. best when listened to at once. i really dont know how else to describe it.

also ... if you like Porcupine Tree and maybe Opeth, you need to hear Riverside.

ive heard good things about Pure Reason Revolution, but i dont know them
