Hi i have a question I have started to tithe, but i am confused... first f all when you tithe are you ONLy supposed to give the money to a church? i ask this because everytime i give to someone in need i deduct it form the tithing amount, is this a correct way to tithe?

My sister in law that is a christian tells me that I can only tithe to a church , that i can help other but it does not count as tithing, it only counts as a good deed.

Please enlighten me on this since i want to make sure i am tithing the correct way, are there scriptures that say that all tithing must ONLY go to churches? I am just not sure if I should just give all my tithing to church, and then give additional for good deeds because i wouldnt be able to afford it .

The churches all have too much money anyway. How about donating to a *secular* worthy cause that's close to your heart?

As tithes are supposed to go to God, I'd say that he's the only one you have to answer to... and giving your tithes to...say... an abused women's shelter rather than a church... you are still giving to God's children right? Helping those in need. I think the main reason most people believe in only tithing to the church is because the church coffers go to paying the church's bills, the pastor's salary, and possibly (if there is anything left over afterwards) to help needy church members with utilty bills and such...

Tithing ( your 10%) Your "First Fruits"

Before we had currency we had land, animals, and vegetaion. We would tithe and sacrifice animals and vegetation. The Bible says to bring your first fruits. Also, to bring the WHOLE tithe into the storehouse. That would be ALL of your tithe into the church.

Anything above your tithe is considered an offering. Whether you sow that offering into your local assembly or bless someone with it, it's an offering. However your tithe is not a complete tithe until it's ten percent. Ten percent of your Gross. Your FIRST FRUITS not your after taxes Fruits!

God Bless...Hope this helped.

I know this is totally off the subject of your question, but I have mixed feelings about tithing, because are you supporting the church, or is that that pastor's income? I have seen pastors and deacons "living large": huge houses and luxury cars, something that regular church members can't afford.

It's 10% of your income before taxes. Say for example, you make $500. 10% of that is $50, for every paycheck. Hope this helps...

It's how you look at it. We all are given different talents, if you have money and want to give it to the church, do that, if you want to give it directly to people who need it, do that. Maybe just listening to people's problems and giving advise, mentoring, volunteering and giving aid to those in need. Tithing is not just giving to the church. Jesus doesn't need $$$, but a lot of his people do. :-)))

No its not. The origing of the word means "one-tenth", which would refer to a percentage of your income. Anything that goes to other people is a donation.
