about 10+ kids in my highschool died from car accidents and crosses weren't placed to mark them, this was about 12 - 14 years ago.
Now it is very popular and common. Does anyone know when the tradition started to get so popular?

here where ! live was the airplane that fell on the way to the Dominican republic it was an air bus that left every Sunday
and when it dropped was pure devastation as is we were moarning already the world trade center and it happened
by the bay where at one time you can look out on a night
and see the light of New York City pointing out as if stars
the wonder of all those buildings and the tall es two no longer there there are now two parks where people come to visit
the biggest is now where the building s fell and
wherein the beginning of that tragedy they came to lie
flowers and crosses on the spot many of these people
if you consider them there bodies were never found
there is no Closeir .or identifying or tending to a love one
so i guess when this happens they have a reason,,
i believe one is entitled as you can not take for granted
a human s life you must respect and look at it this way,,
if but not in life why not in the spirit... just a lesson
be care full on those roads and all the tragedies
there was a musician i heard died on that air bus,,
he had written a song about that plane it was very popular
so much happiness his flight home from the city,,
he Perished on that flight not one soul to identify with
it was devastating the disaster no one has the right
to pluck a Rose with out its stem so why attempt to
remove what identifies with someones ashes as that is all that is left of the spirit just because of distraction
if you love life i would take it as a reminder Never take
life for granted i believe you call this Charity of the truth
in the spirit of other 's

When we first saw crosses used at the side of the road was when we moved to Arizona back in 1958. We started seeing them in west Texas all the way to Arizona. There was one site that had over 12 crosses. Seemed it was a very bad place to have an accident. Family members are usually the ones to leave the crosses now, but these were put there by the highway dept on route 66.
In the state of Texas it started as a one year tribute to a person/s who lost their life due to a drunk driver put up by family members. Now they are placed there indifinitely for a loved one who lost their life in motor vehicle accident.
Boo hoo to the person who answered about the drunk drivers. They should be reminded every day of their miserable life that they caused an accident that killed an innocent life.

I didn't know that were crosses of the teenage tragic deaths. Thought they were vampire stakes. I wonder if it was meant to remind others (strangers) of who went through tragic death at that spot or more for the people who knew the teenagers(s). I mean sometimes I see names on there, I don't know who they are. I kind of see where your mentality is. I don't want to remember some body I don't know. I rather go to the cemetery to remember and mourn of the love ones I loss, not out by the highway or on the side of a street. Sometimes, I mean we're all the same way, feel our love ones are more important to us than others. Sounds cynical, but I feel I need to get that of my chest or should I say my female side of me out they called it our wimpy little person inside. Good enough, yes?

I have heard that they are goin to make a law against that here in GA, but I'm not sure if it's true or not. I was in high school over 15yrs ago and we had only a few to pass away in auto accidents then. We spray painted all over the highway where the wreck occurred. Things like "We love you, missing you", stuff like that. It's so sad to drive by those make shift memorials everywhere.

I see them all the time in jersey. I actually saw one in the parking lot of duncun donuts. It blew me away and I could not even imagine what could have happened to that poor girl. I have been seeing crosses on our roads for over 20 yrs. i think it is a good way to let the family mourn and visit them at the last place they were at the end of their life.
wow, that was a powerful question.

I took a roadtrip to South Dakota this year and they have gone as far as putting a small roadsign at the site of a fatality.
However, I know this practice has been going since I have been a driver. I am going on 16 years.

I dont know when it became popular but it has been around from a long time. My family is from Kentucky and it seems like almost every road has a cross marker on it. I have mixed emotions about it. In a way it is distracting, and in another it is bittersweet.

I don't know, but I live in NC and you see it here a lot. I've noticed it for 15 years or more. A woman ran a stop near our home several years ago and her two children were with her and they were killed in the accident. Every year she would come and tie white ribbons on the stop sign.
So sad.

I don't know when it became so popular, but I don't like it! When my husband was killed in a car accident, I made it well known that anyone who put up a cross where he died would be beaten to death with it! It's on my daughter's bus route, and she did not need to be reminded day after day, of where her father died. People can grieve in a cemetary, and our loved ones still live in our heart.
