Since there's only one way to route it [ I- 55S to I-80 W and make a right ] then there are only three* other ways to save money.
1)Keep your nights in motels at a minimum and use Motel 6. You can do this trip w/ only one night spent in a motel although you may need to rack out in the rest area on top of Donner Pass for a couple of hours,
Day 1 Chicago to Rawlins WY 1120 miles
Day 2 Rawlins to San Francisco 1050 miles
Get out of Chi-town before sun-up and haul ashes WB. Once you get west of Omaha ,American traffic lightens up considerably.
2) Toss a cooler full of food and drinks in your car
3) Figure out if the gas in the state that you are in is cheaper or more expensive than the state you are going to and adjust your fill ups accordingly aka the "wait until Gary fill-up "
* There's actually four .The fourth way is to join AAA and get their"premium package "which will give you something like 4 -100 mile tows a year for a membership cost of about $ 100.00 per year. Basically one AAA tow on the road will more than pay for the cost of membership.

Interstate 80. It's a straight shot!

FYI: We drove from Morris, IL to Beaver, UT in 24 hours.

I'd go with I-80. It's about the straightest, fastest route. I've had friends who have all taken 80 to get through the midwest the fastest. (Just don't speed in Nebraska.)
