I think it depends how long you have worked for the agency - the best place to get the answer to this one is going to be the Citizens Advice Bureau - they helped me out no end to get paid maternity leave when my employers said I wasn't entitled. You are definitely entitled to time off for the appointments - not sure if you could get it as paid. Definitely talk to the CAB - good luck with both the paid time off and the pregnancy - check your dates with the CAB for your paid maternity leave while you are there - you have to give your employer a certain amount of notice of when you are starting your maternity leave from - get it sorted out now in case you go over the time limits.
Also as a temporary worker you are entitled to four weeks paid holiday per year - that is every thirteen weeks you work you are entitled to a week off paid holiday - or a pro rata proportion of your income over a period of time - unless the agency are adding holiday pay to your earnings. This is one fact that some employment agencies try to keep quiet from their temps.

Because you are employed as a Temporary employee you are not entitled to the same benefits that a regular employee has. Also you have mentioned that the company says you are self employed, well this might be true. If you signed paper work upon taking this Temp position the company may have a way of considering you as a independent contractor which would mean that you have no rights to paid anything unless you yourself pay for it.
Best Regards.

I don't know about in the UK but in the US only full time employees are entitled to 6 weeks paid maternity leave...
but that's for delivery and after the baby is born to stay at home and get rest - that is not for appoints to go see the doctor during the whole 9 months...

Under normal circumstances a self-employed person would not be entitled to a redundancy payment as they are not an employee of the company. However, there are legal guidelines in place that may cover this but it would depend on whether your Mum has worked for the one company continuously and whether the hours she worked left her free to take another job as well. Did she submit a weekly/monthly invoice to the company for the work she had carried out, or was she paid via their payroll? She needs to ring ACAS or contact Citizens Advice.

Hiya, Congratulations... Yes you are.... and they must by law let you away from your duties to attend the appointments, ie; you dont have to make them on your day off. All the best with your pregnancy, They are trying to pull a fast one, take it higher (if you can), or visit the citizens advice bureau..... as soon as you mention to your employer youve been there.... they'll roll over and beg! lol. x

They are defo trying it on. I would go to the CAB office (Citizens advice) they will be able to tell you all you need and even contact your employer/agency with the relevant information for you.
Good Luck and Congrats...

You are entitled to the time off, but as you are temporary they do not have to pay you.

You are entitled to payment if they employ you and pay you, as you say they do.
There might be advice on :http://www.eoc.org.uk/
PS: I'm asking you to look back at my question you answered, and read my addition.
