Back in the Middle Ages most people were illiterate but they still at times had to enter into legal written contracts. Usually these contracts would be with local feudal lords or the Church.
A lawyer would read the contract and ask the person to make his mark, an X, the lawyer would then notarize it attesting to and witnessing the "signature". Then that person would kiss the X as his solemn or holy oath to follow through with the contract.
