Yes. Both free blacks and some Native Americans fought on the American side, and the Mohawk tribe was firmly allied with the British. A good number of slaves, promised freedom, also flocked to fight alongside the British, and who could really blame them?

I'd suggest that your recruiting poster be primarily done in pictures--few slaves could read. Generally, in fact, the recruitment was done by word of mouth--when the British occupied an area, the word went out offering amnesty to all who would surrender and pledge future loyalty to the Crown,
and freedom for any slaves who would join with the British forces.

Good luck n your project!

Yes, they did on both sides. The British promised slaves their freedom if they fought for the crown. Many of them were later evacuated to Canada and other British possessions after the war. There were some free blacks who fought for the Americans. Hope this helps.

Many blacks served in the militia and Continental army. Rhode Island had one reg't that was mostly made up of free blacks.
Only free blacks were usually allowed in the Continentals. Rarely, slaves served. Sometimes slaves served in the militia, sent by their masters as subsitutes. They were denied pensions later because the gov't believed the pension should go to the owner!
