I want to loose weight. Besides kicking my soda habit, and avoiding fastfood what should I do?

I have joined a local gym that just opened this weekend. Been there twice so far. What are some good tasting breakfest foods that are good for you and can help me loose weight?

My plan for today is 2 hard boileds (throw away the yellow) bagel with peanut butter (the gym trainer told me it keeps me full longer) and a fat free milk. Lunch I plan to have a subway turkey sub w/ no cheese/mayo. Any other ideas? If any other tall people out there have ideas let me know! Thanks.

A lot of people will suggest books like Bill Phillips popular "Body For Life". I have a copy. It has some good advice in it, but it's also crammed with recommendations only about 1% of the people will ever follow for any length of time.

Unless you have some unrealistic idea that you can a bodybuilder's physique, I would recommend more sane, simple, and easy to follow guidelines.

First, it is true you should avoid some foods. The biggest concentration of bad calories come from baked goods. Cut out most breads, sweet rolls, etc. and you'll make a big change. Don't go overboard. Avoid white breads and go for the fibre-filled ones.

Like some foods? Eat half !! A girl who was always slim told me she was heavy before because she would perpetually crave the foods she had to eliminate from her diet. Then she decided to keep eating most of the foods she liked, but only eat half. She would wrap the other half for another day or just throw it away so she couldn't be tempted. It works like magic. No cravings, but you're only taking in 1/2 the calories.

Just yesterday on Yahoo! News they had an article about why the French manage to stay so thin, despite all the heavy cream sauces and wine. Their secret is that they eat very leisurely, and have a big variety of food, but relatively small quantities. They don't have some gigantic mug of coffee, they have an espresso. They don't eat huge slabs of cheese, they have a few small cubes with their meal. Everything in moderation. Don't see many fat French, do you?

Here's a few ways to get good protein without lots of calories: buy frozen fish (no breaded, fried fish!). Mix some non-fat mayo with lemon juice and spices like chives to make it taste palatable. Eating fish is high in protein and usually low in fat. Salmon and others have relatively high fat content, but it's the good type of omega-3.

Last piece of advice: HIKE. Forget running. Forget taking long walks. Get out in nature and hike, for 4-5 hours. The pounds will start falling off like mad. And remember to drink lots of water every day. It's ironic that something so simple can make you lose weight, but by drinking about a gallon a day makes people lose weight much quicker.

Good luck. Now, get on some shoes with a good tread and hike your way to thinness.

I'm a Child Care Health Coordinator actually (odd I have run across this ? in politics lol) but anyway.. it's not reasonable to completely change your food habits overnight and you will be doomed to relapse unless you have unbelievable will power if you try.... so don't be afraid to "sneak" the occasional soda or fatty food.. just the fact that you have CUT DOWN on them and have started WORKING OUT will be enough to start you down the right path.. also.. physical activity doesn't have to be going to the gym and doing cardio 4 times a week (though that's a good option)... it can be as simple as walking around the block while talking on your cell phone or getting up during commercials while at home and doing something rather than just sit there and veg. out... all in all you seem motivated and on the right track... good luck and email me if you have specific questions you would like answered.

That sounds like a good start, but why are you asking this in the politics section, you might get a better response in the health section.

Peanut Butter is about 50% fat.

Get the 6" sub for lunch, not the 12"

Treat yourself to a low fat low calorie dessert also.

Walk to the gym, don't drive.

For dinner and lunch, lean protein the size and thickness of the palm of your hand, the rest of the plate filled with vegetables and some fruit. This is the simplest description I have heard of the Atkins Diet. It works, I lost 30 pounds in a month, tough, no bread, pasta or rice.

Good luck.
