I am hoping to do a job transfer. However, I still need to find an apartment (that takes pets) & do all the other necessary tasks to make it a smooth transition. I just don't know where else to begin besides saving money. I am planning to move late Spring/early Summer 2008. Any tips?

Make finding the apartment you first priority. You can secure an apartment from that far away (lots of faxing and money orders). Then call all the utilities needed and say you need to be hooked up by your move-in date and send them money.

In my case, I flew out here and had to stay in a hotel for 3 days until the moving van showed up. But then the cable, internet, water, electricity, everything, was ready to go.

I might have been lucky, I had a relative here scout out prospective apts. and neighborhoods and tell me where or where not to live. Good luck!

(Oh, and make a LOT of lists to keep organized.)

Make a list of everything you need to take with you, your furtinure, clothes, kitchen stuff. Take pictures of it, that way you will have proof in case something gets lost. When you are packing the boxes label them Kitchen box 1, Kitchen box 2. Do the same for all the other rooms. Take pictures of the boxes with the numbers showing, from each room. This way if you are using a moving company if they happen to get there before you they will know where the boxes go. I would suggest that you put your new address on the boxes too. That way if they are lost, you might have a chance of getting them, especiall if you are willing to pay the postage. If you want to be really organized make a list of what is in each box. The U.S. post office has a booklet out about moving. Look in there for other ideas.

sell everything, except what you can't live without. ship those items to your new place.

check out www.craigslist.com for housing and anything else you might need.
do some research on the areas of san francisco, to find out where you'd like to live.
