Here's the situation - a not-so-close friend is planning a surprise birthday party for his wife. He called my husband yesterday and told him to tell me to bring a certain dish (which takes a lot of effort to prepare). Apparently, he has been calling everyone I know and asking them to bring different things to the party.

My question is - is this an acceptable practice? To plan a surprise party for your spouse and then make it a potluck???

(I'm feeling a little ambivalent about this because my birthday passed just a few weeks ago, and I didn't even want to prepare food to throw myself a birthday party.)

Please give me your opinion.

Thanks.

You should not have to bring food for a surprise party unless it is a close friend or family member.
He should hire a caterer for the food. It would be easier on him and the guests, that's if he can afford it.
Maybe the money is tight and he wants his wife to have a nice b-day.
Tell him that the dish that he has requested is out and suggest that you will bring a bucket of chicken. Good eating. And happy belated b-day to you.

I dont think its right. If he wants to make a party for his wife then he should take care of everything. He has some nerve. When you bring a gift for her, that is all you should do. If he wants everybody to spend their time and money giving food, who's going to give her a gift.

I think it is a neat idea. But, if you guys do not want to make the dish then perhaps you could suggest another. It sounds like he is just trying to make it special and wants many folks to come be a part of the celebration.
I wish my husband would do that for me....LOL

Why not pass with all of them?!? I propose any exploding meat screams relaxing! bare cake wrestling...'nuff suggested. Who does not sense like punching a clown each now and then. As for the bobbing for sausage, in basic terms in basic terms remember to are donning sparkling undies.

it is OK for people to participate and bring food,i for one think it is fun to bring covered dishes. My sister on the other hand HATES it! and there fore dosen`t and no one gives her grief. So if it is something you really don`t want to go to. Then just don`t I don`t think you`d be wrong

Sounds pretty tacky to me. I think if he had mentioned BEFORE, that would be different, but to wait til the last minute is just lame.
