He is Shia. You can not be a high member of the govt in Iran unless you are Shia. The theocratic govt is Shia.
The bulk of their population is Shia, they also have Zorasterists, Jews and Christians as well as several minoity sects of islam.
Jews, Zorasterists, and Christians are noe required to wear specific colored labels on thier clothing to identify them by religeon. (remember the blue star of David to Natzi era jews?) Also Hitler is Ahmedinejad's hero. He has stated so MANY time and VERY publicly.

OK, the first answer(regerrugged): Christians are not in hiding. Armenian are also Christian live freely in Iran, they are allowed to make and consume Alcoholic beverages( which they deliver to Muslims parties in trunk of their cars) lol, One of the top strikers in Iran's National Soccer team is Armenian.
I have heard the largest number of Jewish people outside Israel lives in Iran. The color clothing is just S***T, S***T, it is S**8T, and a lie. Contrary to the rumors of Iran is Back warded, no freedom for women, and all other S**T, and I saw some pictures proving it, last week from Tehran, that i will some how make available for all to see. It's so much facts I can tell you, but I'm too lazy to type.

Edit: BTW i am not a fan or supporter of Islamic Republic, regime( The connected Members, or gang), i am disgusted with the killing/Assassinations that took place in 1987-1989, which is called Chain-Crimes also famous as holy Crimes.
Including about 4000 members of Mujaheddin, some very liberal, highly educated intellectuals like DR Froohars
(Husband and wife), Dr Shah poor Baklhtiar( France) and Fraidoon Farrokhzad, One of the best Show Men in the world if not the best (Germany) and many more.

90% of Iran is Shia and ~8% Sunni.
65% of Iraq is Shia and ~32% Sunni.
Iran is unique in the Muslim world not only for being overwhelmingly Shia, but having a theocratically Shia constitution.
Like having church and state toghether, you know.

since a sunny(not considered as muslims)
cannot be president of iran then why in pakistan number of president and prim minester were shia as pakistan is sunny state. no sunny mosque in tehran even sunny not allowed eid prayer.
