I've heard it at least twice this week and have no idea what this means

Basically, it means if you're going to do something you know you shouldn't be doing (like cheating on your spouse) then don't do it anyplace where the wrong people could easily find out about it, like in your home town or around people who know your spouse. It's very similar to the idea of "Don't fish off the company pier," which means don't date or mess around with anyone you work with.

Typical expression probably came from the farm as I think some horses do this (As in they don't). Sounds like reasonable hygiene, but not all domestic animals have this standard.

But it means don't make trouble where you have to live. If you have a good job, don't bankrupt the company. If you have a good family, don't break it up.

Juan is right. It means, don't **** in your own nest. You have to live there. Go and misbehave some where else and when you get home you wont be in so much trouble, maybe..........

it means the same as "don't bite the hand that feeds you". essentially don't do bad things in a place where you are getting something good. you wouldn't want to poo in a place where you eat would you?
