It seems that evey model is differnt. The 3-Series kills the A4. The 5-Series also kills the A6. The 6-Series is in a class of its own. The Z4 and TT are close, but the BMW is better. The X5 beats the Q7 except when it comes to cargo room. But the A8 beats the 7-Series. The S-line is killed by M, but the RS line is tied with the M line. Bmw is the largest european car importer in the United States and it is that way for a reason- I prefer BMW.

BMW used to make cars that are faster, but the new R8 (0-60 in 4.0 s) would smoke the M3, M5, and M6 (0-60 in 4.8,4.5,4.5 s respectively according to their websites) in a drag race. And the new R10 coming with a V10 will be even faster. And who cares about the higher top speed? The vast majority of people never go faster than 150 MPH+. The newest S5 looks a hell of a lot better than the M3, even though its a lil slower. According to consumer reports, Audi has much better reliability than BMW and Mercedes, while maintaining a more complex AWD system. Car and Driver rates Audi interiors as the best in terms of fit and finish and in ergonomics. The SMG transmission present in the M-series is constantly panned by all automotive magazines ( so bad in fact, the new M3 will not have it this year), while they praise the DSG transmission present in VW's and Audi's. BMW's win more awards on engine design than Audi, but Audi has dominated Le Mans this millenium. I personally think Audi is the better overall car company, but every1 has different tastes.

EDIT: Foamy, the 2.0L TT goes 0-60 in 5.9s, while the 3.0Z, having 1 more L in displacement, is slower (0-60 in 6.2s). Check their respective webistes. Please do your research

The Audi RS4 is better than the new V8 powered M3!

BMW's are over-priced and are being triumphed by the likes of Infiniti whose G and M cars defeated both 3 and 5 Series Bimmers. Audi is also know for impeccable ergonomics.

If you are looking into a used car, don't buy any of those. Maintenance is way too expensive, better look at some Lexus or Acuras.
As of new ones, it's hard to answer your question, without knowing the price range or the exact models you have in mind. Both brands are very competitive at all levels, the pricing is similar, with a BMW you would probably get more options though (in North America).

BMW is faster and more reliable, and has more luxuries.

Audi TT is slower and heavier than the BMW Z series
Audi R8, their lamborghini style, is slower than the new M6 which can exceede 200mph where as the R8 maxes at 184mph. If you want fast, and reliable, go with the M series by BMW.

I will go for 'neither of them' because both of them is fun to drive :) although Audi RS4 Quattro is the best of all BMW's and AUDI's lol
