You need a degree for most corporations and educational entities to even consider you for any job, including web designer. The people that say you don't, ask them how much they make as a web designer and how long they have been doing it. With enough drive, skill, and a degree, you could easily make a living as a web designer. My salary is pretty good and I get quite a few freelance jobs during the year.
Good Luck!

You don't have to have a college degree (mine's in English lit...is that related?) Starting pay as a tech writer many long years ago was $12 per hour...I think these days it might be a bit more...

The starting pay can be anything from minimum wage upwards. You don't _need_ a degree, but it helps. Degree or not, you need to be good at what you do. Basic spelling and grammar is a bonus too.

It never hurts to have a degree, but the pay is abysmal these days.
