I practice art quite a bit and have been practicing for a while. I'm pretty good, but just not as good as I want to be. I feel like I haven't been making much progress as far as advancing my skills goes. Any tips for helping me to advance? As far as art goes I'm into portraits and still life.

Even though effort may be consistent, learning is not as linear. One always goes through a series of rapid increases and plateaus when learning anything.

Trying to stay motivated while in one of those plateaus is often a difficult thing. Just keep trying and experimenting with new techniques and practicing what you already know and you will start improving again.

Maybe join a group of friends and feed off of each other's creativity. Get different ideas on the same concept.
Go to a seminar. Listening to others speak about their work always opens up some creative gates.
