i dunno about a tradedy, but going through things, stressful things yes. If your life is peachy from birth till death and nothing wrong happens to u or anyone around u ever, how will you work on pationts, and empathy, compassion, or feelings for others.
Yes i believe it's by endureing things in our life that we gain character, for good or for bad. Thus the reason that some of those really rich famous kids that have it all from birth, tend to go waywards, among many other things that has nothing to do with the question>_<

I believe character is shaped by every little thing it runs up against, or runs around with, or undergoes. From thrilling happiness to dusty depression, character is shaped. I really can't say which of the many things people go through in life is the greatest thing shaping their character.

I've had my brushes with tragedy; it's hard to think of many people who haven't at my age. I like to think it's made me more compassionate and even improved my character along the empathy lines... but I've always had trouble setting up boundaries between myself and others, so I also work on knowing me to be individual, etc. as well.

I've also had times of great joy which I believe also had a big hand in shaping my character. I at least know what joy is like, and at most can feel some when I live totally in the present moment and 'get in touch.'
So I ultimately believe both tragedy and joy are the greatest ways to shape character.

There is something like the power of the negative. For instance, the kind of music that is becoming popular which is actually agitating the young minds. It catches easily, and quick without any effort from the part of the receiver. But it shall last onoly very little. Tragedy in life, does have this negative impact of faster realisation, but tragedy is certainly not desirable and necessary to shape charecter. As a matter of fact, charecter shaped out of tragedy may not last very long indeed. That is the problem with negativity.

I think yes and no. The reason I think this is b/c you put tragedy on one person, the next person, it will affect them in a diffrent way. As it may help one person, and make them better in the long run, it could also hurt the other and just bring them down and never be the same type of person that they could have been. I've seen both.. Seen my mother go crazy after she lost her father, my grandfather, and started on drugs and she got to where they were running her life. That happened when I was really young and she never came from that. But on the other hand, When she passed away 2 years ago, it did nothing but make me stronger and make me a better person. Not because I lost her, but seen what she went through with all the drugs and what not, so I stopped there and havn't done anything since. This may not be the answer you was looking for, but the best I can do.. Chris

No. Both masks are necessary, both tragedy and comedy. Moreover character is best built upon a basis of personal values that grow and develop through tests and trial, successes and failures with the support of an active community of interested and involved loved ones. Tragedy alone can as much crush character as shape it. Humour is a response to life that facilitates a positive outlook necessary to weather the bad and celebrate the good of what goes into character.

Yes and No. It is one of the faster ways to shape up character if taken positively. If any one had a tragedy and the heart is broken then its the best time to pray and elevate oneself.

However, many tragedies ruin people's characters too! Many criminals had some tragic backgrounds.

A good way to improve character is fasting. Abstinence from food, water and evil thoughts from dawn to dusk. It helps to build character positively.

Possibly. I think that undergoing tragedies, such as the death of a sibling, can end up having a possitive effect on individuals, or a very negative effect. Some who have had to go through that appently never really recover, but some get through it and by God's help, lead a better life.

I believe that your experiences in life do shape character. But sometimes how you react to the best things that happen have the greatest effect on character. It is much harder to react properly to prosperity that tragedy. Look at all the sports figures that are instant millionaires but can not deal with it properly.

No matter what ---we are going to have tragedy in our lives as well as the good times.
I would hope that the Joyful times outnumber the bad .

The way we choose to deal with the circumstances life throws at us , will shape us as much as the tragedy alone .

So much about life is how we choose to deal with it .
Those choices are a good marker of how our character is developing --don't you think !

I wouldn't say its the greatest, because i believe experiencing things through tragedy is being forced to experience them without premeditated choice. However, in the end it does build character. I think making mature decisions to do things that we dont' necessarily want to do builds character moreso because we can look back and be proud of ourselves.
