Different people have different tastes. You may put a spice in that I don't like and then I would put in something you don't like. The 'broth' would end up tasting wrong.

The meaning is nothing to do with cooks, it's just an analogy to describe a situation where if too many people are trying to undertake on task they will probably spoil it as each will have a different way of doing it and see the others as interfering. Using the example you can imagine that if a cook were to be making a mealof broth another cook may add something that the first didn't want or do it a different way. The more cooks that interfere the more the broth will spoil.

It's true but it refers to too many people doing one job will ruin the outcome cause they'll never agree on the final product. If 4 cooks were to make a broth, one would but salt in while the other prepares something else. Then another one would probably come and add more salt so on so forth so the broth would be destroyed by salt. Too many hands on one job aint good !!!

It's a met·a·phor or a figure of speech, implying the the first cook goes by the pot & adds salt etc. then next cook goes by & adds salt not knowing the first one already did that! Ending in a salty uneatable mess!!!! It applies to life in general,. There are many other sayings that you might have heard. Like "to many chiefs and not enough Indians" (Everybody giving orders, each thinking they are the boss and then there is no one left to actually do the job!).

That is too many cooks ........... etc.

If there are too many leaders trying to get something to happen, then they spend all their time trying to persuade the others what is the right way to do the job and not enough action. Also, they will have a compromise forcred that compromise the quality more.

Everybody has a different opinion and when there is no consensus, the result has no direct purpose.
