Both places are great; you'll have a good time either place.
I think San Diego is going to have a better variety of stuff to do if you are here a week; if it was a shorter time (less than 3 or 4 days) you'd probably find either place to have lots of stuff. Seven days in Vegas could possibly get to be a bit repetative as there are less different types of things to do.
I'm from San Diego so I'm prejudiced of course.
If you end up in Vegas, gotta tell you about this place maybe an hour or so out of Vegas called Valley of Fire State Park which has more petroglyphs than anywhere else I've ever been in the world. You can camp there or just drive over for the day.
But I'm still in favor of San Diego; you'll never run out of different things to do.
If you come to San Diego and like beer you might enjoy going to Escondido to Stone Brewery for their tour and bar...free samples on the tour! 30 microbrews on tap; awesome restaurant. It's in the general vacinity of the San Diego Wild Animal Park, so if you visit the Animal Park you can head to Stone afterward for a cool day.

Depends on what interests you both.
San Diego -
Beautiful beaches, ocean right there, harbor tours, perfect sunny weather, good restaurants, Sea World, San Diego Wild Animal Park, also SD is not far from Los Angeles or Mexico.
Las Vegas -
Lots to do for sure: just going through hotels (very impressive), museums, gambling, shows, rides, restaurants, clubs, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon (can take a tour out there from Vegas). If you are going before the end of the year the weather should be okay, although I believe it is still pretty hot there for another month at least.
Both are great places. I've been to both. Had fun in both places. Both won't disappoint. But if you are looking for something more laid back and relaxing, pretty, etc. then San Diego would be better. If you are looking for a lot of fun with a large variety, then Vegas would be better.

OK.. here we go..... San Diego is nice because of the harbor, and the history. If you are young the Gas Lamp District is the best place to be on Friday, and Saturday where at night the streets are lit up. There is one hookah Bar there which is always fun. Plus not even 30 Min's. away you got TJ, and Camp Pendleton to the north.
Vegas... One word. Casino's
You can go to San Diego, and catch a charter flight to Vegas for pretty cheap and Visea Versa

It depends on what you want to do and when you want to go. San Diego has beautiful beaches and great weather pretty much year around. It has the Gaslamp District that has great night life and if you go down to Coronado you have luxury spas and resorts. I recently went and stayed at the Loews Resort and Spa. Great service and spa. You could also go to Berona for the gambling if you are into that. They also have a great spa there too.
Then there is Vegas. There's also great night life and if you are a gambler there are casinos everywhere, it's Vegas. There are a couple of drawbacks. The weather is one of them. It is either really hot or very cold. There are only a couple of months that have o.k. weather. The next is the traffic. If you're driving there, the strip is always busy and if you're flying, you have to rent a car or go from taxi to taxi or walk around everywhere. And in really hot or cold weather that's not fun.

I'm sorry to be so forward, but San Diego is 10x better than Vegas, you just gamble and that's about it..but if you go to san diego, you have beaches and everything you could want without going very far. You will NOT regret it if you go to San Diego.

Hmm well. Let me say that I live in SD.
I clearly love LV and was planning on moving there in about 2 years and i visit often. but honestly, i dont know. many people go to vegas. and depending where your from, they can both be equally far. i agree with the people who said go to both :p its fairly easy. but picking one...
vegas- vegas is great. lots of shows, great hotels , casinos(if your old enough) good places to eat and stay, and over all fun things to do. lots of shops and stuff too. i recommend this place. but then again its soo hott..but the end of the year means cold. and it gets really cold in the winter. its too hott in the summer too cold in winter
sd- san diego on the other hand is great too. we have many beaches since we're located on the coast and we have many attractions. this is another big tourist city. we have the gaslamp quarter, and sea world, and lots of good places too. you can visit the hotel del which is supposably haunted or visit old town and see the haunted whaley house and we what old time sd was like. theres also many great places to be by the bay and such and lots of malls and a nice sunny place to go. ppl really love the weather here. its ok i guess. not as great as its said to be but i have to say its better than vegas's weather. by the end of the year it should be getting colder and right now its been getting pretty cold. around 60 degrees maybe?
i dont know :]
