Biologically, the body and mind stop functioning and there is apoptosis and other postmortemal changes. Spiritually, the soul leaves the body and goes to ethereal world.

According to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) we go the heaven where there is beer volcano and a stripper factory, YES!. If you dont believe in that then......they take you to a morgue, drain your body fluids, fill you with embalming fluid, put you in a casket and put you in the ground where worms and bacteria digest your body and recycle the atoms for future use.

The heart stops beating and the brain stops functioning - In some cases the latter is harder to detect as some people don't seem to use their brains much anyway...
Other than that.... who knows. I know some people claim to have "outer body experiences" while it is believed they are dead - but whether that is verifyable is questionable.

who knows? i had a dream that when you die you end up in space with all of your proper friends before you met people in earth and you morph into your true form. then we sit a share stories about you adventues to different planets, mine being earth, and laugh at all of the stupid thing people did. unfortunatley i dont think that actually happens

if its the soul you're talking about, I've read somewhere that death is the start of a new state of existing so you can think of it metaphorically as, ex:
finishing a book and starting a new one
opening the door and leaving your room to get into another one

You don't know anything about it.
The people you leave behind are very sad but then they get over it & have fond memories - never forgetting you and then they carry on with their lives.

The soul leaves the body and goes wherever it goes and the body decomposes and is being eaten by microbes , beetles , worms etc

Depends on what you believe. Some people say we go to heaven, other say we're reborn (reincarnated) and others say nothing, just darkness forever.
Personally, I prefer the heaven theory, don't you?!
