As noted, the first tiebreaker in MLB's procedures would settle the issue -- seasonal head-to-head record. Let's check the results:
2007 Red Sox-Yankees series
team // W // L
Yankees 10-8
Red Sox 8-10
Careful scrutiny reveals that the Sox finished a close second, while the Yankees were barely out of last place. But yes, the Yankees win such a tiebreaker.
Had they tied at 9-9, the second tiebreaker (intradivisional record) would be used.

The season records with each other is the determining factors and the Yankees here have the advantage....actually happen I think the Red Sox took it all...they tied but the Yankees had one more win over them(2 this year) and were crowned champions.....next question in my mind is what if they had split??..would they have a one game playoff....all of this is assuming that no else ties them for the wild card....ie: if the Yankees-Red Sox were tied but they had the same record as the runner up in the other league and they all had the same record!!! what then???GO YANKEES! STINKIN RED SOX!!

OK Stankee fans. Time to stop dreamin. Boston will win the division outright. Its only a matter of time. Question here is who has the home field advantage in the ALCS if the 2 teams have the same record. If its Cleveland and Boston, and both with same record, does that go head to head and if so does anyone know that record? I know Boston crushed the Central but not specifically against Cleveland??

If that was the case then they would look at the season records between the 2 teams against each other then the Yankees would get the seed as there is no more games between them and the Yankees have won 10 times and the Red Sox have won 9 times.

There is NO playoff.
This is settled under the rules at the attached link, "Scenario #1." The first tiebreaker in Scenario #1 would settle it this year, and that's head-to-head record. That's been a 10-8 NYY advantage in 2007.
