I bought some new doorknobs, but realized that the holes in the doorknobs are too small for them (my house is old). I also have a "doorknob kit" for my electric drill, but the hole-cutter it comes with has a drill in the center that just wont work for a door with a hole already in it.

Is there a special tool for this? I don't want to have to resort to nailing a piece of wood to the door. I don't have time to repaint!

Thanks for any help?

I mean the holes in the doors that are cut for the doorknob, not any feature of the doorknob itself.

Use a piece of 1/2 inch plywood that extends at least 1-2 inches beyond where you want to drill... hold it in place with a couple of bar clamps (if the hole only has to be enlarged) it will give you something for the guide bit to bore into.

One note: before you use the hole saw, make sure the hole doesn't have to be completely repositioned because of the length of the plunger assembly (or whatever you call the latch that keeps the door closed).

You have two choices without destroying anything. First try using a pointed sharp knife blade on the bolt. Push the door in, use the knife tip to pry the bolt, preferably straight on using the strike plate as a pivot, pull the door out to hold the bolt, reset the knife blade and keep repeating until the bolt is sprung from the plate. You can only move the bolt a little at a time but it will almost always open. If the flat of the bolt is facing you, so must the hinges. With a relatively good screwdriver and a hammer tap out the hinge pins and pull the door towards you. Been there done that. Good Luck!

Don't worry about it . . . there are metal sleeves that can be put over the edges of doors like yours to facilitate installation of new knobs and locks. I have one of those on the door to my room. The sleeve supports the knob and latch, not the wood. Go to a hardware store (an actual hardware store where you can get service; look in the phone book for one) and tell them the situation. They'll point you in the right direction. Theoretically you could line everything up very carefully and drill OVER the other hole if the new hole is larger, but you probably won't be able to get it just right so the latch will line up. It's worth a try, but the sleeve is foolproof. Good luck!

I have had this problem one time on a couple of doors trying to bore a straight in-line hole even with a jig is tough the hole saw wants to walk without the center guide drill. I may have gone to extremes but I cut holes( the original size ) in a 2x6 and saved the blanks then I epoxy glued them in the hole. After that I just bored the larger hole with the hole jig .Good luck!

you have a 1 1/4 inch hole, newer knobs need a 2 1/8 inch hole the only way to drill it and it still line up with the latch channel is to use a jig, it's a tool that clamps on to the edge of the door and lines the hole up perfectly you may be able to find at home improvement stores, they make cheap plastic ones if you only need a few uses

Take a piece of wood slightly larger than the existing hole and place it against the door over the hole. Use a sharp pencil to mark the size on the wood (through the hole). Cut out this as a spacer for the hole saw to cut the new hole. Place the newly cut spacer on yet another piece of wood large enough for you to hold, screw two screws into the spacer, off center so as not to interfere with the lead bit on the hole saw. Hold apparatus to the door and make new hole.

Find a piece of scrap wood big enough to drill the 21/8" hole in. Using a couple of clamps, center the wood around the original hole and drill it out. Depending on the thickness and composition of the door you might find it easier to drill from both sides.

I don't know why your doorhole cutter won't work for you...it worked on my door?
I guess the only other thing you can do is file it out or use a drummell tool, since I would assume the doors are wooden?
