In all berne countries copyright lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 50 years. for EU and USA it is life plus 70 years. no renewals are possible. That is for current works.

For older USA works, renewals are no longer necessary but expires based on publication date. If the original author assigned rights to a publisher, then it is that contract that would determine what his heir could receive, not copyright law.
