Are you Australian? That's the only place I've been where they say "Ta" in lieu of "Thank you".

My #1 gal Miyuki is from Japan, so I say, "Arigato gozaimasu", to her. To my Beijing gal Bi-Chen, I say "Shei shei". South China has 3 different thank you's: "M'goi saai" is for doing a favor, "Dojeh saai" is for a gift and "Yao sum" is for kind wishes. In French, I say "Merci beaucoup". In German, I say "Danke schoen". In Spanish, I say "Muchas gracias". I meet people from many countries.
