Acting is not a good job; it is an EXCELLENT job, especially when you're "on" and you can just feel it! You've got the audience eating out of the palm of your hand and the whole show is just white-hot! It's even better if evryone else is sssmokin' too, but this is rare in smaller theatres with large cast plays. There's always someone having an "off" night -- somebody who shouldn't have been cast in the first place (director's girlfriend, theatre big money patron, etc.) But a couple of times, I've felt like if there was a satellite picture of the on-ness "heat" that a show could give off, our theatre would show up like NYC or Vegas! Small casts each time -- Jacques Brel is Alive and Well... (4 people), Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (3 people), Dames at Sea (6 people)
The prostitution rap comes from when women began acting in troupes, and as they toured from town to town, got the reputation from sharing the same quarters with the men, often a barn or tavern. And of course John Wilkes Booth didn't do us any favors either!
The down side to acting is that you don't get this feeling all the time and often you have to earn your keep as a waiter, delivery driver, or temp.

One definition of "prostitution" is the act of selling your services or talents (a very real part of yourself). In that context, acting is, indeed, prostitution. But so are such occupations as Engineering, Carpentry, Teaching, Truck Driving, Retailing, House Painting, Pharmacology, Scientific Research, or any other job for which you get paid.

Acting is the best job in the world. That's another reason why it is so hard to get. Your friends are idiots. Prostitution has nothing to do with acting any more than with any other profession. Love to hear their reasoning. Sounds like they heard that some where and it sounded good so they repeated it. Sheesh!

Are your friends actors? If not, I doubt they know what they are talking about.
I have friends who are actors--small theaters, of course, not Hollywood--but either way, acting is a lot of hard work and long hours. It's glamorous, but difficult.

Acting is not a GOOD job. It's a GREAT job! As a matter of fact, it's not even a job!
Don't worry about what your friends say. Just worry about what that little voice inside of you is saying!
Good luck!
