Send out the National Guard every morning to force people to jog at gunpoint. I'll justify this by calling it a "State of National Emergency."

Not everything is the government responsability. I guess this is more an educational issue, than an state issue.
Maybe the only thing that can be done by the government is direct some public policies in order to estimulate the families to have better habits.
There are some ideas and habits that should be reinforced:
1. All the family have to have three balanced meals at least.
2. The breakfast is the most important meal of the day, speciallly for kids.
3. The water shouldn't be substituted by soda or even procesed juice, as much as we like those, they add sugar to our diet that we don't need. Those should be used as a complement of the meal and in small ammounts.
4. It's important for the kids to have better habits, that they share some of the meals with their parents, those are the moments where they aquire the habits, but if we leave the to have their meals alone, they will be temped to have junk food instead of healty food.
5. We have to take 5 diferent kinds of fruits and vegetables a day. This will force you to reduce the ammount of meat and procesed food. We are used to have more of proteins and not enougth vitamins that we find in vegetables and fruits.
So, i guess, what the government should make, trougth the healt department, is to promote this kind of habits in their population, and specially on their younger families that can make something with the new generations.

It's not the President's or the government's responsibility to address this problem. It's a matter of personal choice (yes it is a bad and unhealthy choice), and the government has no business telling people what they can and can't eat, when to exercise or what medicine to take and not take. As long as they are not breaking the law by being fat, then it is not the government's business. With that being said, I have no problem with schools offering healthy meals, instead of pizza and greasy hamburgers, and I have no problem with private businesses taking certain foods off of the menus (trans fats, etc.), but I do have a problem with any level of government telling a business to change it's menu.

By making health care affordable and include the const of nutritional counselling etc. in what is covered people can get the help they need. Work with pharma companies to make medications that do not make one gain weight becuse they take a particular medication. Encourage research and development into heredity and how certain genes make some folks have a greater tendendency toward obesity. We are so quick to point fingers at obese people without a full understanding of what is going on. If we spend as much on research into obesity as we have in tobacco related diseases we would likely see fewer and fewer fat people in America.

This country is a democracy. You want the govt telling us what to do, when to do it, and how to do it? Come on. Stop playing the victim. Take responsibility for your own actions. It is a common knowledge that eating healthy and exercising are ways to stay healthy. Don't spend money on junk or fast food. If anything, you should talk to the food companies. Write them a letter. But do not let the govt get involved in this personal matter.

If people want to be fat, lazy pigs that stuff their faces with Big Macs and fries and shorten their lifespan, that's their prerogative.
You can educate, legislate, plead, cajole, and threaten all you like, but some people won't change.
Instead, how about little help to those that do see what they are doing to themselves, and ARE trying to get in shape and live healthier? How about making gym memberships tax deductible?

What else can a President do other than encourage Americans to get off their butts and exercise and boycott fast food?

The government can do nothing. Everyone is responsible for their own lives. If you know McNuggets make you put on weight, cut down on the McNuggets.
It's not rocket science and it shouldn't take a bill from Congress for you to eat healthy.

It's not the government's problem, that is until socialized medicine kicks is. When the government has to pay your medical bills, you know their going to try to make you lose weight. until then it's the individuals problem.
